Thomas Troesch
Skidmore Class of 2026
Driven College Graduate Hoping to Break into the World of Archives
My Background
I am a Senior at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, studying to be a Sociology Major and a Music/Media and Film Studies Minor. Over the past four years, I have merged my social science background with positions that center around service and education. Be it tutoring, assisting professors in their research, or acting as a mentor for future college students at an academic summer camp, I’ve worked to make a difference with what I do.
Outside of my professional experience, I’m a Dean’s List and Alpha Kappa Delta student who has consistently succeeded academically throughout my time at college. I’ve also made a name for myself in my college community by serving on the executive boards for our radio station and satire magazine, and am a committed musician and screenwriter in my free time. After graduation, I hope to pursue a career in libraries and archives before I attain a MLIS degree in my future. I’m looking forward to any chance to grow as a student and member of the workforce and would love to connect about any opportunities.

Why Sociology and Archives?
Coming from the diverse community of Maplewood, NJ, I was exposed to numerous perspectives and ideas from a young age. After taking a Sociology class in high school, I was inspired to continue my studies in the field during college. While I was first a Music Major, I was dissatisfied with the rigid career path that the department was sending me on, and wanted something that gave me more options. I was sure that Sociology was the perfect fit after taking Research Methods, and seeing the way I could apply my social science education to real areas of academic and scholarly work that I was passionate about.
My path to libraries and archives similarly began after I took a library course in my Junior year. I was introduced to numerous library faculty and learned different ways that libraries and archives can act as vechiles for social change. This inspired me to take on an archival research position over the summer, working to preserve important cultural materials from the Kanatiohareke Mohawk Community. Seeing the way archival work could be used for service and preservation showed me that I could do something I love while making a real difference. After college, I hope to pursue a career in libraries, so I can continue this valuable work before I obtain my Master’s Degree in Library and Information Sciences.
